"Learn To Run" A Testimonial on a Success Story
by Karen McDonald-Hurley & JoAnne Sytsma
"When we told people we had just come back from the Toronto Half Marathon, most people replied that they couldn’t run to the end of their driveway. A year ago, neither could we. We started out by taking the “Learn To Run” courses offered through the Brockville and Area YMCA and we had run a few 5 kilometer runs in the Road Runner’s “Freeze Your Buns” races.
We then heard about the “Learn To Run” a half marathon course but the prerequisite was a comfortable 10k. We talked to the instructors
who encouraged us to try it. There were, as expected, real runners who showed up but we found our usual comfortable spot in the back and what we lacked in talent we made up in sheer determination. If we couldn’t make it to the long runs or hill training we completed it at an alternate time, as well as following the training plan as close as our schedules would permit. We struggled Karen McDonald-Hurley & JoAnne Sytsma
,but always completed the runs and felt great.
Our instructors were always enthusiastic about our efforts and treated us like real runners.
By the time we ran the Ottawa Half Marathon
in May, more than half of the original class had dropped out…but not us! We wondered where the real runners went. We were determined to complete this run and we did!
Feeling great, we came back to the Y and worked harder and became more determined to run another half marathon. This time, we had some confidence so we wanted to enjoy getting to the finish line and not just focusing on the end. We discussed this plan with our personal trainer Cathy Reid who structured our one hour weekly workouts to help us build even more strength and endurance. She was very knowledgeable and proactive about injury prevention as our old bodies started to experience the wear and tear of running 5 times weekly. We can’t give enough credit to Cathy who was with us every step of the way encouraging us and sharing her expertise. Along with Cathy we found the Y staff were valuable resources about training schedules, techniques and anything we could throw at them. They were always ready to listen and offer advice.
It has been an incredible journey for us and we would encourage anyone to try the learn to run courses and stick with it. We did it and it has been lots of fun. We still don’t consider ourselves real runners but we do consider ourselves very thankful for the support of Cathy and the Y staff. If we can do it, anyone can. Think about trying a “Learn To Run” course from the Y have fun!"
